Do Kids Need Dental Sealants to Overcome the Decay Dilemma?

Teaching children about proper dental hygiene can often be a challenge, and it really isn’t until we are much older – and have usually dealt with a few cavities or extractions – that we fully realize the importance of maintaining good habits when it comes to caring for our teeth.

One of the ways you can take steps to protect your child’s adult teeth is by having a little preventive maintenance done in the form of dental sealants. These coatings completely cover a tooth and can last for a decade or longer. They are most often used in situations where tooth decay may occur but has not yet, and can be done on children as young as 5 to 7 years old. The cost of sealants is less than $50 per tooth on average, and is frequently covered by most dental insurance plans.

Children with teeth that are not prone to tooth decay do not necessarily need dental sealants. But sealants can make a huge difference for those who need it, by giving them years of healthy teeth instead of the pain and potential health risks associated with tooth decay and cavities.

An American Dental Association spokesperson stated that dental sealants can provide an 80% reduction in cavities immediately and a 60% reduced risk for at least four years or more, but less than 40% of dental care providers offer sealants to parents.

If you are concerned about your child’s dental hygiene, make sure you ask your dentist about dental sealants.
